Chimney cap installation in brief
The job starts at the top of the chimney. We check the size and shape of the flue, the condition of the crown the cap will sit on, and whether anything is living in or blocking the flue. Then we fit a cap sized to that flue, add a mesh screen where it makes sense, and fasten it securely. If something on top needs attention first, we tell you before the cap goes on. Materials, cap styles and each step of the process are covered in how chimney cap installation works.

The Oakland Hills fire zone expansion and what sits on your chimney
According to the City of Oakland Fire Department (Wildfire District Inspections), Oakland expanded its Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone to cover the entire Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Area of the Oakland Hills (Ordinance 13851, June 17, 2025), and every parcel there gets an annual vegetation inspection.
This applies to homeowners whose parcels are inside the Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Area of the Oakland Hills. Each of those parcels now gets a vegetation inspection every year. The Fire Department decides what that inspection covers, so check its compliance standards for your own parcel instead of assuming.
The main decision during cap installation is the screen. As a general rule, a home with a wood-burning fireplace near trees and brush is better off with a cap that has a mesh screen. The screen holds back larger embers before they leave the flue, and it also keeps out birds, animals and leaves. If your parcel is in the expanded zone and the chimney has no cap, or the old one has rusted through, take care of it before your next burning season. We also install dedicated spark arrestors if you want screening built specifically for that job.
A cap doesn't replace a clear flue
A screen on top works best when the flue below it is clean. Creosote buildup and debris are separate problems, and we can handle them during the same visit if the chimney needs it.
When a new cap is the right job, and when something else comes first
- No cap, or a cap that blew off or was knocked loose by a falling limb: a new installation is usually the right fix.
- A cap that's rusted or bent, or has torn mesh: we can replace it with one sized properly to the flue.
- Birds or animals already inside: they and their nests have to come out before a cap goes on, or the cap traps them.
- Water in the firebox even with a cap on top: the leak may come from a cracked crown or failed flashing, and a cap alone won't stop it.
- Not sure what condition the chimney is in: start with a chimney inspection in Oakland so the cap goes onto a sound top.

How it goes
Request an estimate
Estimates are free. Tell us whether the chimney has a cap now, how you use the fireplace, and whether you've seen animals or water.
Measure and check the top
We measure the flue and check the crown and flue opening so the cap fits and has something solid to sit on.
Fit and fasten
The cap goes on with a screen suited to how you use your fireplace, and we show you what was done.
We also take on commercial and property-manager work, so we can fit caps on several units in one job. The full details of our chimney cap installation service are on the main service page, and you can browse everything we do in Oakland on the area page. When you're ready, get in touch.
