Chimney and fireplace work for Half Moon Bay homes
You might burn wood every winter, light a gas insert a few times a year, or have a fireplace nobody has touched since you moved in. Whichever it is, the work you can book falls into a few groups: keeping the chimney and fireplace clean, finding out what condition they're in, fixing what's worn or damaged, and keeping the dryer vent clear.
- Cleaning: chimney sweeping, flue and creosote cleaning, blockage and nest removal, odor removal, and cleaning for fireplaces, inserts and wood stoves.
- Inspection: chimney, fireplace and camera inspections, plus inspections for a home sale and after storm damage. Here is what a chimney inspection covers.
- Repair: masonry, crown, leak and liner repairs, along with flashing, dampers, fireboxes, smoke chambers, draft problems and prefab chases.
- Caps and covers: fitting a chimney cap, animal screens, spark arrestors and chase covers.
- Gas and installation: gas fireplace repair and maintenance, gas logs, gas lines, new fireplaces and inserts, and conversions.
- Dryer vents: cleaning, airflow testing, lint and blockage removal, roof vents, repairs, rerouting and cover replacement.
Where to start if you're not sure what you need
If you don't know when the chimney was last looked at, an inspection is usually the right first booking. It tells you whether a sweep is enough or whether something needs repair. That way you aren't paying to clean a flue that has a cracked liner, or patching bricks when the real problem is missing flashing.
Some signs are worth calling about before the next fire: smoke drifting into the room, a smell from the fireplace on humid days, water stains on the ceiling or wall near the chimney, crumbling mortar, or sounds of animals in the flue. On the laundry side, a dryer that takes longer than it used to for a normal load often points to lint buildup or a crushed vent run.
Gas fireplaces need attention too
Gas units don't build up creosote, but burners, pilot assemblies, glass and venting still wear and collect debris. Regular service keeps them lighting reliably and burning cleanly.
