Fireplace repair in brief
Fireplace repair covers the parts you can see and use: the firebox walls and floor, the mortar joints between firebrick, refractory panels in factory-built units, the damper, the smoke chamber above it, and the glass and doors on the front. On gas units it also covers the burner, logs and controls. The goal is a fireplace that burns safely, drafts properly and stops deteriorating. For the full scope and what each repair involves, read how fireplace repair works.

- Brick fireplace repair: cracked or loose firebrick and eroded mortar joints in the firebox.
- Smoky fireplace repair: finding why smoke rolls into the room, whether the cause is the damper, the smoke chamber or a blocked flue.
- Cracked or crumbling refractory panels in prefab fireplaces.
- Fireplace glass that's cracked and doors that stick, sag or won't latch.
- Gas fireplaces that won't light, won't stay lit or burn poorly.
Outdoor fireplaces and the fire department's permit
The El Cerrito Fire Department urges residents with an open-flame, non-cooking yard fire feature, including outdoor fireplaces, to apply for a no-cost Open Burn Permit; natural gas/propane features are not covered. (Source: City of El Cerrito Fire Department, Open Burn Permit – Residential.)
In practical terms, this is about yard features: an outdoor fireplace with an open flame, used for something other than cooking. It isn't aimed at the fireplace inside your living room, and features that run on natural gas or propane are left out.
If you have a wood-burning outdoor fireplace that needs repair, applying for the permit is up to you as the resident; our repair work doesn't include that application. If your outdoor fireplace runs on gas or propane, the permit doesn't cover it, and the repair itself is gas fireplace work, which we do.
Before you light an outdoor fireplace
If the fire is open-flame, not for cooking and in your yard, check with the El Cerrito Fire Department about applying for its no-cost permit.
Repair, or a different job?
Most worn or damaged fireplaces can be repaired. A few loose firebricks, a warped damper plate or a cracked glass panel are contained jobs. When a prefab unit is badly damaged throughout, or you want a different kind of fireplace altogether, replacement may make more sense. That's covered under fireplace installation for homes in El Cerrito.
If you're deciding whether to keep burning wood or switch to gas while you're fixing things, our guide to gas vs wood burning fireplace lays out the trade-offs before you commit to a repair or a conversion.
